Happy end of 2008! This has obviously not been a very productive year for me, writing-wise, but originally I had other plans. One of those was to write a Yuletide New Year's Resolution so that I could participate this year; however, I lost interest in the NYR I was writing and so never managed to get it up to 1000 words. It is fairly complete as is, however, and so I'm just going to set it free now.

You will note, if you are familiar with the source material, that the story is divided up into comic-format segments. This is intentional, as I had always meant to transpose my script into the actual comics (and you can see where I stopped writing, because that segment isn't in the correct speaking order.)

Um, so as it turned out I actually hated the that meme the moment I tried it and immediately gave up! Ha ha, I'm so dedicated to my craft.

Anyway, the time has come to introduce a new feature of this journal: recs! In the future my recs will be living at del.icio.us/trisrex, but so far there's just this one. And I wanted to call individual attention to it, because it's pretty damn important.

Remember half a year ago, when sisabet  and sockkpuppett 's Supernatural vid Women's Work caused a splash by directing (distressingly so) attention to the sexualized violence against female characters on that show?  It was really hard to watch, particularly for fans of the show who hadn't realized the scope of the issue, and a common statement was for fans to argue, more or less, that Supernatural wasn't particularly sexist, it's just part of a medium and culture where this kind of thing is the norm, and that this same kind of vid could be made for practically any show.

At the time, I said this:

And as to the frequent statement that a vid like this could be made of virtually any fandom — probably true of many, definitely not of all. For all of the huge flaws in Joss Whedon's vision of feminism, Buffy exists in the first place, the very first place, to subvert the horror trope of the female victim. Yes, women die on his shows, yes particularly on Angel, yes some of these are problematic; but as much as you could certainly make a vid of women dying in *twelve whole seasons* of Buffyverse, I don't think it would have the same erotic edge that is so disgusting when thrown in our faces like this. Obviously, Joss isn't making TV shows right now, so that's out. But it disturbs me to think that women are resigned to this and feel they can't escape it. It is escapable, to an extent, if you so choose. There are messages you can send.

I now have some proof for this, and it sucks to experience and is absolutely wonderful.  Origin Stories is an incredible BtVS/AtS vid executed by giandujakiss from a concept by untrue_accounts which, despite the given summary "It's Nikki Wood's fucking coat," was pretty incomprehensible to me the first time I watched it and broke my heart the second time.  Here we have the story of Slayers, and it's not the happy ending version with the cute little girl playing softball.  It's a Buffy gone topsy turvy (yet totally accurate), where Buffy — my favorite character! — is complicit with the enemy, and Robin Wood — I thought him so boring! — bears witness.  I don't know if it means to, but it comments, pretty harshly, on fandom and what we will and won't forgive.  This is, in a way, the Women's Work of the Buffy fandom, and even though I was right in that the women of the Whedonverse did not all die in skeevy, sexualized ways, and some even survived, that doesn't mean that the patriarchy never had its way.

The music, by the way, is also great.  The only Aesop Rock song I knew, and reinvented for me right along with the show.  Be sure to read the lyrics, as well as the comments to that post.
